Massive rise in electricity bill – Dr. Sant’s fault!

PN minions have instigated a new tradition in our Country, namely ‘blame it on Dr. Sant’; and this time round I have to admit they are spot on in their claims, and on two grounds!

Firstly PN’s strategy in contrast with MLP’s, is to first put a rumour around the country of what is to come, give time for the people to let it off between themselves, then legislate something that is slightly less than what rumours were saying. Thus PN gets to look as a benevolent leader. Smart ain’t it?!! On the other hand the MLP are victims of their own beliefs in honesty.

It was Dr. Sant who first hammered on us a raise to our electricity bill, while PN governments rode on his wave.

Dr. Sant failed to keep one of his major promises that were on top of his agenda. Dr. Sant never implemented the ‘accountability’ policy.

Indeed if Dr. Sant had legislated this agenda of his, many PN officials would now be paying for our bills. It was the MISTAKE OF THE CENTURY to stop our hedging agreement on oil with Libya. Every major company and government has hedging agreements, but the PN were smarter. Remember what they told us: that this change in policy was to take advantage of the fluctuation in oil prices. Since when did oil prices fluctuate on the downside? Even a schoolboy studying elementary economics knows that the prices of oil, gold, silver and copper never go down!

Therefore it is Dr. Sant’s fault that we are suffering under the PN regime. First he was too honest in his outright raise of the prices of electricity and in doing so paved the road for the PN’s arrogance. Secondly having not implemented the ‘accountability’ policy we have nobody to take to court for mis-managing our country.

PS: Dear Dr. (green wannabe, but only taxes) Gonzi, where are my 'energy savers' please?

Will somebody please explain to me how hedging benefits the buyer? I'm not trying to be funny. I really don't know the answer.
If I were selling oil and somebody asks me to fix the price of oil for the next six months, I'd look at the trend in oil prices over the last 6 months. At the rate of increase we're seeing I'd slap a hefty increase on today's price and bob's your uncle.
Without going into local partisan politics, can somebody please explain the "good bit" for the buyer in hedging?

In the same way a "forward buying rate" helps a business who's transactions involve mainly a foreign currency.

The seller gets a long term guaranteed contract. Many advantates here ranging from finances to logistics. The buyer would in turn receive an advantageous rate impervious to fluctuations.

Elementary, my dear Watson-it's a matter of maths. We would have worked a division sum if Dr.Sant was in govt. and with Dr.Gonzi it's a multiplication sum. Believe you me multiplication sums are going to be quite popular in corruption, arrogance, hospital waitng lists, number of energy savers........

Maybe because schoolboys are too young to remember that prices went down in 1998 to US$12 a barrel and in the removing the hedging agreement then the Nationalist government did the right thing. Hedging does not benefit the buyer when prices are going down.

As to oil from Libya this was cheap because it has a high sulphur content. Apart from now being banned by European legislation it contributed big time to Malta's air pollution.
